Do you actually need electrolytes? What the science says

Electrolyte supplements are everywhere, but most people already get enough from food and water. Here's who actually benefits from supplementing.

Electrolyte supplements are having a moment. Sports drinks, powders, and flavoured sachets crowd the supplement shelf, and social media has made them feel like a training essential for anyone who sweats. The reality is more straightforward: most people who exercise regularly already get adequate electrolytes from food and water, and supplementing on top of that is unlikely to improve anything. Electrolytes are minerals that regulate fluid balance, nerve signals, muscle contraction, and blood pressure. The key ones are sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium. They are lost through sweat, which is why endurance athletes and people training in heat genuinely need to pay attention to replenishment. But for someone training under 60 minutes a day, eating a reasonably balanced diet, and replacing fluids after sessions, there is no meaningful shortfall to correct. The supplement industry has successfully marketed a physiological need that already exists into a problem most people do not have.

What electrolytes actually do

Electrolytes carry an electrical charge in solution, which is what allows them to drive processes like nerve conduction and muscle contraction. When you sweat, you lose electrolytes alongside fluid. The body’s kidneys tightly regulate electrolyte concentrations in your blood, and for most people, normal eating and drinking keeps that balance stable without any intervention.

The four that come up most often:

  • Sodium: the primary electrolyte outside your cells; regulates blood volume and fluid retention
  • Potassium: works inside cells; supports muscle function and normal heart rhythm
  • Magnesium: involved in energy production, muscle function, and hundreds of enzyme processes
  • Calcium: important for muscle contraction, including cardiac muscle (if you’re weighing up calcium from food versus supplements, that question has its own nuance worth reading)

These are not exotic compounds that require a specialised product. They are present in everyday food, and for most people, everyday food already delivers enough.

When supplementing actually makes sense

There are situations where electrolyte intake genuinely matters beyond what food and water reliably provide. The clearest ones:

  • Training sessions lasting more than 90 minutes, particularly in heat or humidity
  • Endurance events or multiple training sessions in the same day
  • Sweating heavily enough that skin or clothing leaves a visible white salt residue afterwards
  • Following a very low-carbohydrate or ketogenic diet, which causes the kidneys to excrete more sodium than usual

Outside these situations, the case for supplementing is thin. A 45-minute gym session, a standard lunchtime run, or a regular training day at normal room temperature does not deplete electrolytes to a level that a meal and water cannot fully restore.

Why most people are already covered

The average Australian diet supplies plenty of sodium. It appears in bread, dairy, condiments, meat, and most packaged foods. Potassium is abundant in fruit, vegetables, legumes, and dairy. Magnesium and calcium show up across a wide range of whole foods.

Unless your diet is significantly restricted or your training load is genuinely high, what you lose through regular exercise is replenished through normal eating. The assumption that you need a supplement to replace what a standard session takes overstates the loss and underestimates what food already provides.

Worth knowing: most commercially available electrolyte products are primarily sodium with small amounts of other minerals added. In many cases, you are buying a flavoured salty drink with health-adjacent packaging, nothing more.

Sodium’s role during exercise

Sodium is the electrolyte lost in the highest concentrations during sweating. Drinking large volumes of plain water during prolonged exercise without replacing sodium can dilute blood sodium to a level that produces cramps, dizziness, and fatigue, a condition known as exercise-associated hyponatremia, which international consensus guidelines link to overdrinking relative to sodium losses during endurance activity.* This is a genuine concern, but a specific one. It applies during prolonged endurance events, heavy sweating in heat, or situations involving very high fluid intake without accompanying food. For standard gym training or a moderate cardio session, the body’s regulatory mechanisms handle the balance without any help needed.

One point that often gets missed: electrolytes cannot compensate for under-hydration. If you are not drinking enough water throughout the day, adding an electrolyte powder to a small amount of fluid does not solve that problem. Adequate water intake comes first. Electrolytes maintain the right balance within adequate hydration. They do not create it.

Focus on food and water first. Use electrolytes when training duration, sweat rate, or your dietary approach genuinely justifies it. If you are reaching for a supplement powder before a standard gym session, you are optimising at a level the basics have not even been addressed yet. Frequently Asked Questions

Usually not. If your sessions run under 60 minutes, you are not training in heavy heat, and you eat a reasonably varied diet, normal food and water cover your electrolyte needs. Supplementing on top of that rarely changes anything measurable.

No. Electrolytes only maintain balance within hydration you already have, they cannot create it. If your overall structure around water, protein, and training consistency is not sorted, an electrolyte powder will not fix that gap.
